Translation Guide

The translation app is available at translate.greenheartgames.com

New Languages

We require a certain interest and commitment before we start translation on a new language. We also need at least two users who will act as moderators for a language. If you would like to offer your help then please search on our forum and see if other users have also offered their help (search for the English name of your language). If no topic is found please start a new one and pick the translation category. We will only start a translation if we are reasonably confident that we can publish the game in the language.

Moderators

By default, new users can only provide suggestions. To be able to approve translations you need to become a moderator. A moderator makes sure that translations are correct, follow a consistent style and fit well into the game. If you want to become a moderator and take a leading role in one of the languages then please announce your intentions on our forum (best with a outline of your qualifications).

Hard Rules

Below are some important rules which need to be followed in order for the translations to work properly. If you are not sure about something ask us.

Special characters

Text contains special characters such as {0}, {1} …,\n and {n}. The translation MUST contain these elements at appropriate places, otherwise it will cause an error in the game!

Explanation of these elements:

  • {0}, {1}, {2}, {3} Any numbers in brackets such as {0} mean that other dynamic text is inserted at this place. This could be the name of the player or game or a sentence fragment. Often this is obvious from the context and sometimes it is explained in the comments of the text.
  • {n} is a special instruction which effectively splits a message into separate screens in-game. Usually this is done to create a nicer flow and to split up large messages into text that can fit on the smaller ‘tutorial’ or ‘notification’ windows. When longer paragraphs are involved, then translated text should try to stay within a similar length of the original text. Whatever you do, do *not* introduce new {n} instructions.
  • \n refers to a line break. Only use them when they are present in the original string.

Company and product names

The game contains made-up company names (such as Ninvento, Vonny), product names (such as TES, Gameling) or character names (such as Steve O’Connell). You must use these same names. Do not change them.

Other Guidelines

  • Keep the terminology of the game consistent. Translation of game elements such as design points, technology points and the different development stages and areas should be kept consistent throughout the translation.
  • A good translation feels native to the language and transports the essence of a statement or word. Word-order, choice of words or style of the English text might not be what you want in your own language.
  • The game usually employs an informal tone towards the player. In tutorial messages or elsewhere a casual/relaxed and friendly tone is preferred but in media messages or news report a more formal tone might be more appropriate.
  • Translations need to be 100% complete before we can aim to integrate them into the game.
